This pattern is ideal for a soft pure wool 4 ply or sock weight yarn maybe one of those skeins of hand dyed yarn you picked up at the last show you went to!? Use a larger needle than the yarn specifies to create a good drape.
The finished scarf should measure around 22cm x 180cm, this is dependent on your tension and yarn that you select. The blue scarf featured here is Lang Mille Colori Baby
