Easy crochet baby blanket patterns: soft, simple, and made to last
I don’t know why but it was always March time that saw an influx of crocheters and knitters into the shop looking to create something special for a new little one be it for a friend, family member or work colleague. And this is what inspired this Blog post.
There’s something incredibly special about making a baby blanket by hand. The best crochet baby blanket patterns are those that combine simplicity, great colours and long-lasting quality.
In this post, I’ll explore what to look for in a pattern, how to choose the right yarn and stitches, and what makes a blanket truly baby-friendly. If you are not confident in choosing colours I have two colours of my popular Ripple blanket.
Start with the right yarn
When you’re crocheting for babies, yarn choice is everything. A baby’s skin is delicate, so it’s important to choose fibres that feel soft and gentle. Look for yarns that are smooth, breathable, and free from anything scratchy or irritating.
Cotton blends and baby-safe acrylics are ideal choices. Cotton offers breathability and easy care, while soft acrylics provide warmth without weight. Both tend to be machine washable, which is a must for busy parents. A favourite of mine is Sirdars Replay, it’s a 50%/50% cotton and acrylic blend perfect for frequent washing and really nice to crochet with!
Tip: Always check the label to ensure the yarn is washable at 30°C or above. A beautiful blanket isn’t much use if it can’t survive daily life.
Choose stitches that are simple, soft, and structured
For beginners, the best crochet baby blanket patterns use straightforward stitches that still create visual interest.
Think classic stitches like double crochet, treble crochet, and gentle shell or ripple patterns. These create blankets that are soft and smooth but with enough structure to hold their shape. My Ripple Blanket kit uses trebles and by increasing and decreasing in the row it creates a pleasing wave effect, always a favourite! It is suitable for a Beginner who has mastered a straight edge to their work! This isn't always easy and if you are struggling make some small practice squares to perfect your technique.
Avoid very bulky textures or anything with open gaps that tiny fingers might get caught in. Instead, look for patterns with a close weave and gentle drape. Consider the drape and weight
A good baby blanket should be lightweight yet cosy, wrapping snuggly around a little one without feeling stiff or bulky.
The drape depends on the yarn weight, stitch choice, and hook size. For a looser, softer feel, use a slightly larger hook than the yarn label recommends. This will give the fabric more movement and make it more comfortable for the baby.
If you're following a pattern, it will usually specify the recommended hook size and yarn weight to achieve the desired drape but it’s always worth checking how your tension measures up to the patterns! It’s no bad thing it’s just the way it is if you need to use a different hook size, go with the flow.
If you're designing your own or adapting a pattern, it’s worth making a small swatch to test how it feels.
Make it practical (but still beautiful)
Baby blankets often become cherished items, used every day for naps, pram rides, playtime, and cuddles. That’s why durability and ease of care are just as important as appearance.
Look for crochet baby blanket patterns that can stand up to frequent washing and still look lovely. Straightforward patterns in timeless designs are ideal for gifting or passing down.
Neutral shades are always popular, but don’t be afraid to add a pop of colour or a fun trim.
Pastels, soft greys, and gentle earth tones are all perfect choices for spring and summer blankets.
